Description
A splendid 1808 Silver Verge - Doctors Watch Please view large images below As my regular clients will know I only ever add superb stock to my sales inventory. This quite stunning pocket watch fits all the criteria that I demand when purchasing goods. In near mint condition with no dents, dings, cracks or damage, this 200 year old Silver English (London) Hallmarked 1808 Verge “Doctors Watch” is one of the nicest I have ever had the pleasure to own. It's a large watch with an un-damaged crisp enamel dial and has a “stop watch” feature favoured by Doctors of the time. Hence the term “Doctors Watch”. Quite remarkably, this watch actually keeps fairly reasonable time although like all watches of this age it could not be deemed as a "reliable" timekeeper. The case is beautifully and clearly hallmarked and the watch outer case measures a nice large size of 60mm diameter x 80mm maximum height. It weighs 8.03 ounces with the Chain. I believe the hands could well be made of pink gold as there is no sign of pitting or time wear. They are in superb condition. The stunning and decorative movement can be seen below in my images. I believe this watch was made for the Gentleman named on the movement (This is not the watchmaker) Henry Sabine. A very rare and unusual name for this period in English history. As a complete aside I have done a little research on this name and my searches via Parish records etc only throws up one Henry Sabine from this period living in the London area. He appears as a Jury Member at a trial at the Old Bailey on 16th May 1804. I will supply a photocopy of the original trial manuscript with the watch. Later he appears using his married (Double Barrelled name) as Henry Sabine-Brown, a Captain of the 85th Light Infantry. He died in 1843. I cannot absolutely confirm "without doubt" that this is the same Henry Sabine who first owned this watch, but one cannot imagine that there was more than one Henry Sabine living in London at precisely the correct period because it is such a rare and unusual name. The lovely silver watch chain that accompanies this piece is later than the watch itself and I’ve added it simply to compliment a beautiful watch. The chain is hallmarked and dates 1899. The watch comes with a key supplied (not original to the watch). If you are unsure of how to set, open and wind this watch then please ask. If you only buy or add one pocket watch to your collection this year then you won't go wrong with this one. I simply had to have it and I'm sure you'll feel the same way about it. A truly lovely and quite remarkable piece. What seperates the best from the rest is always condition and you won't find a better 200 year old watch than this one...
