Description
OFFERING THIS ORIGINAL, RARE, EXTREMELY COLLECTIBLE APPLETON, TRACY & CO. 18 KARAT NEAR MINT, SOLID YELLOW GOLD AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY POCKET WATCH. 16 SIZE, OPEN FACE, TRIPLE HINGED, SINGLE SUNK WHITE ENAMEL DIAL. THIS VERY FINE CIRCA 1865/1866 143 YEAR OLD ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR ERA TIME PIECE IS ONE OF THE FINEST, RAREST WATCHES I HAVE OFFERED ON EBAY. FABULOUS NEARLY MINT PRESENTATION. ORIGINAL MOVEMENT TO CASE TO DIAL AND CRYSTAL. KEY WIND KEY SET, 3/4 BRIDGE MOVEMENT RUNS STRONG, KEEPS GOOD TIME. THIS AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY POCKET WATCH HAS MANY EXCEPTIONAL FEATURES FOR THE DISCRIMINATING, ADVANCED COLLECTOR; VERY FINE TO MINT CONDITION, ORIGINALITY, RARITY FACTORS, HIGH GOLD CONTENT, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA PRODUCTION. PRODUCTION RARITY According to NAWCC data base historical records, only 2000 Model 1860 American Watch Company pocket watches were made between 1863 and 1867. In 1859 the Waltham Improvement Co. and the Appleton, Tracy & Co. merged to form the American Watch Company. The onset of the Civil War in 1860 imposed factory production restrictions and limitations leading to the scarce availability of this watch. Shugart lists this time piece as a 3 star rarity in their rating scale, which equates to a production release of 100-350 18 karat gold all original Model 1860 pocket watches. ORIGINAL GILT MOVEMENT 16 size, key wind key set (wound through cuvette cover), 3/4 bridge, 15 jewel, Model 1860 movement displays near mint original matte finish gilt style patina. Double screw-down recessed gold jewel settings. Factory bright iridescent blue screw heads. Ornately engraved vine-and-feather swirl balance bridge. Movement signed in fancy engraved Victorian style script, "WALTHAM, MASS. Appleton, Tracy & Co. 1865 Fogg's Safety Pinion Pat Feby 14. No.250,545". Fogg was one of the top designer members of the Waltham watch group and his invention of the Safety Pinion dominated for the period. Serial number chronology indicates 1865/1866 production. Movement winds and sets properly, appropriate winding key included. Smooth running, while keeping excellent time. Professionally serviced, cleaned, lubricated and timed. ORIGINAL 18 KARAT GOLD CASE 16 size, open face, triple hinged case in near mint condition, commensurate with extremely careful minimal pocket use of this 143 year old, nearly 1 1/2 century antique time piece. Crisp, firm triple hinged pry-open snap-shut case covers operate properly. The hinges have very firm action, as if this pocket watch was rarely used. Both case cover serial numbers match. No monograms, inscriptions, jewelers marks. Very heavy gold weight, comparable to an 18 size pocket watch. Weighs approximately 127.4 grams including case, works, dial, hands, crystal, all parts. Please note that this 18 karat yellow gold case shows up as yellow gold/rose gold in the photos due to lighting adjustments. There is no rose gold tone, only yellow gold. Plain, raised design pry-open snap-shut back case cover hinged near 5:00 o'clock position, pry-lip near 11:00 o'clock position. Cover displays a fabulous gold mirror-like reflective shine, opens to near 90 degree angle, maintains open positions at all angles. Crisp coin-edge border circumference. Underside of cover is recess embossed signed, "W.P.&Co WARRANTED 18K 3832". Wheeler, Parsons & Co. were manufacturers, distributors and purveyors of high grade early American pocket watch cases. Inner cuvette pry-open snap-shut protective dust cover hinged near 5:00 o'clock position, pry-lip located near 11:00 o'clock position. Cuvette cover provides key wind key set access, with a delicate coin-edge border design around the key hole openings. Cuvette cover has a gold mirror-like reflective shine, trimmed with a very crisp engine-turned border circumference. Underside of cuvette cover displays a faint, delicate circular repetitive engine-turned pattern. Engraved 3832 BWC? (can't determine for sure the final initial). Original 18 karat gold pry-open snap-shut bezel displays a crisp, coin-edge border circumference design matching the coin-edge border design on the back case cover. Hinged near 7:00 o'clock position, pry-lip located near 1:00 o'clock position. Bezel opens firmly to near 90 degree angle, maintains open positions at all angles. Bezel houses original extra thick, high raised beveled nearly mint, smooth polished glass crystal. Original 18 karat gold near mint bow and crown. Circular bow is firm, no loose play, maintains all adjusted positions. Tight, firm bow often indicates minimal pocket or chain use, and is a nice feature when pocket watch is displayed in a watch stand. ORIGINAL DIAL Single sunk white enamel dial signed in black lettering, "AMERICAN WATCH Co". Crisp, black Roman numeral hour chapters. Black outer circumference tracking with black triangle markers at 5 minute positions. Recessed auxillary seconds dial displays black Arabic numerals at 10 second positions and black outer tracking with small black rectangular markers. This 143 year old dial presents itself in factory bright condition. No hairlines, no chips. You can barely see (10X) a small area of vintage professionally refurbished enameling between 9:00-10:00 o'clock hour chapters at outer tracking. Spade style hour and minute hands, diamond style seconds hand display factory bright iridescent shine.
