Description
Illinois N.O.S. 12-size conversion dial.  Mint condition conversion dial with black Arabic numerals on a special silver gray dial. (This particular color was used in railway watches because it provided better visibility in low-light conditions than porcelain dials.) The recessed sub-seconds dial and the bordering line between the center and outer rings are bright silver. The sub-seconds dial is at 3 o’clock. The dial is made of silver (most were made of brass).  Dial feet at 1, 5, & 8.  Note:  There is no such thing as a “sidewinder” watch.  A rattlesnake, yes; a watch, no.  The stem of an open-faced watch should be at 12 o-clock.  This convention helped prevent errors when reading a watch in low-light conditions.  When older style hunter-cased watches were converted to the more modern open-faced cases they required a dial that orientated the 12 to the position of the pendant stem.  Thus, for a “conversion dial the feet and 4th pinion hole match a hunter movement, but the face is adjusted and the seconds dial ends up in the 3 o’clock position.  Watches sold with the pendant stem at 3 are simply hunter movements placed in an open-faced case and not “sidewinders.”Note:  Sunk-seconds dial means that the sub-seconds dial is a separate dial that has been soldered to the primary dial.  Double-sunk means that both the inner field and the sub-seconds dial are separate pieces that have been soldered to the primary dial.  Recessed dial means that the sub-seconds dial is lower than the field, but that the dial (usually painted metal) is a single, stamped disc.  Considering all condition factors as being equal, it’s generally considered that porcelain double-sunk dials are the most valuable (made of three pieces), followed by porcelain single-sunk (made of two pieces), and straight porcelain (single fired disk).  Porcelain dials with fancy colors and metal foils are the most valuable and are graded quite differently.  Metal dials for specific models (such as military watches) can be more expensive than porcelain, so consider this information simply as a general guideline. This will be sent from Montreal and the cost is based on Canada Post light-packet rate, which includes $100 insurance coverage.  The charge is $7.50 to the U.S. and $8.90 international.  In Canada it’s less.   This class is up to 250 grams (8 oz.) and I suggest combining purchases to save on postage.
