Description
On offer here is a beautiful gold consular cased 18th century verge fusee pocketwatch made for the Dutch market. When holding it in the palm of my hand it has a solid and massive feel to it. It weighs 100gramms and is rather onion/oignon-shaped with its diameter of 44mm (not including bow and pendant) and its thickness of 21.5mm. The gold casing has a brilliant glow to it and opens and closes well. It has identical markings on inner and outer lid and casemaker initials JK. It has an almost unscratched bullseye crystal and very nicely cut gold hands. The dial is a perfect example of the style that was made for the Dutch market with its arched minute ring. The dial is signed J.C.Neweren, has Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic ones for the minutes and shows some age wear and minor restorations. When the glass ring is closed they are hardly visible. The movement is signed J.C.Neweren on the elaborately decorated top plate with floral carvings and blued screws. There is the most beautiful continental-style two-footed cock/balance bridge in silver with a mock pendulum (this was sometimes applied to make a pocketwatch look more like a clock and help people understand what made it tick). The pendulum is hard to see, since the watch was ticking away happily when I took the pictures for this ad. When you look closely, you can see it moving directly above the silver regulator disk. Depicted on the silver cock is the mythological goddess of DE OOGST (=The Harvest). The movement is running the full length of the chain. Therefore, I have not had it serviced/cleaned. Between the plates the movement is signed with some kind of marking and II6I, it looks bright and clean and it has very nice egyptian-style pillars.
