Description
This is a rare, vintage, small pocket watch by Elgin. I have had local watchmakers and jewelers try to help me date it, but the closest we can come to dating it is by the Serial # F108844 -- which would date it to the 1930's or '40's. The greatest interest in this watch has been that it is a hard-to-find "coin" watch; which means it was made to be carried in the pants pocket with coins. The winder is inside the outer rim of the watch, so it was not made to be affixed to a chain. The obverse of the watch has an engraving of St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. This leads to much speculation that the watch was probably carried by a soldier for protection. The writing around the engraving of St. Christopher reads, "St. Christopher * Be My Guide." The case is of sterling silver. The watch is in its original Elgin box which is a small dark red 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" box with an accordion-style insert in the box which holds the watch. The box has some wear on the sides and corners. The watch is in excellent running condition. The size is 8/0 Elgin movement; Caliber 642; 4 adjustments/15 jewels. Of additional interest to the serious collector is the story of St. Christopher who was canonized as the patron saint of travelers, then later "decanonized" by the Catholic church. I have had this watch for a good while since it has such an interesting history. My pictures do not do the watch justice. Please feel free to message me if you have questions.
