Description
TEMPLATE                   VINTAGE HAMILTON POCKET WATCH  #10E             923 ~ MASTERPIECE ~ PLATINUM ~ ALL ORIGINAL                                                                     NO RESERVE!!                                                                                                           Welcome to my fall auctions of Rail Road & solid gold pocket watches. For the holiday season I will be offering over 100 fine high grade pocket watches by Waltham; Elgin; Hamilton, Illinois; Ball; Howard; Patek Phillippe; IWC & many more. These watches will be perfect for the new or advanced collector or will be perfect for that unique Christmas gift. With the uncertainty of today's economy, maybe it's time to invest in something that is tangible & you have the pleasure of enjoying instead of having your money in other "investments"!   Up for your consideration is a fine & very scarce vintage 10s Hamilton 923 "Masterpiece" 23j platinum pocket watch, circa 1938. 923 23 jewel movement is wrapped in a very scarce solid platinum marked Hamilton case.  Comes complete with original fitted display case & paperwork, all numbers matching. Investment Grade condition 95%. No Reserve! This is a one owner watch & bought from the family of the original owner. As found & all original!! Excellent 10s platinum case that measure's 44mm. Just a classic men's art deco dress watch.  For the man who deserved the very finest!!   Sterling silver dial and pearled track with applied 18k white gold markers & hands. Period Hamilton advertisement declaring the 923 23j  part of The Masterpiece Series. It shows the Masterpiece in platinum with price on application. Although the 923 may not have been marked as "Masterpiece" on the movement it certainly was marketed as such in the contemporary advertising. They are considered Masterpiece Watches, especially those we find in the very uncommon platinum case.  I have heard the price for this watch new was $625.00! Just as much as a new car then!! Outrages money for a watch, just coming out of the depression. No wonder they are so scarce... The watch guide does not refer to the 923 as a "Masterpiece" but Hamilton did in their advertising. Hamilton called it a "Masterpiece" so that is what we'll call it. Who's to argue with Hamilton? The case is in excellent condition with light wear from carry & use. Monogram is neatly engraved on the back. It really doesn't get much nicer than this... Case is marked Hamilton / 90% platinum 10% iridium.  Comes with the original ivory bakelite fitted display case & original paperwork. This complete package has been together since day one! Grade 923: 23 extra fine jewels / jeweled motor barrel / escapement cap-jewel / Elinvar Extra hairspring / micrometric regulator / nickel silver plate and bridges / Rhodium plated / finely damaskeened / Adjusted to temp. & five positions. Near mint 923 10s movement is stem wind & pendant set. Watch is running fine & has excellent motion.  Movement has not been serviced or timed. Just a few close ups to show you the condition of this movement. Please take a good look at these photos. Look at those screw heads. It really is near mint! Marked Hamilton 923 ~ 23 Jewels  ~  adj. 5 positions ~ serial number R227 dates this to 1938. All numbers of the paperwork match that of the watch.  I dare say, you will not find a nicer example of this 923 "Masterpiece" in platinum! Where do you find them?! Much less in this condition, in platinum with original display case & paperwork.  This is a must have for the serious Hamilton watch collector. Of Special Note: If you are using an older copy of Shugart's book, throw it away & get the 2008 copy. Prices are considerably higher, as much as $1000! You really don't want to miss out on these watches by underbidding using an old book & regretting in later, which you will, because you will not find nicer examples of these railroad watches, period.             What else can I say? These will be the nicest examples of pocket watches you will find on Ebay or the internet. I take great pride in my watches & promise these will be the crown jewels in your collection.  Photos should tell the rest of the story. Would make a very nice gift or a great addition to your own collection.  Low opening bid with no reserve, you will not be disappointed! CONDITION: Investment Gade 95%! Member of NAWCC (0141082) since 1998 Ebay Power Seller since 1997                    I have been approached by some about selling their collections, though I have not done consignments in the past, I'm re-thinking this, since selling off the much talked about railroad collection this past March.
