This type of watch was very popular as a “dress watch” for special occasions. It was made by the South Bend Watch Co. of Indiana, U.S.A. who manufactured watches between 1903 and 1929. It comprises an ornately decorated, cushion shaped, 14K yellow gold-filled case, housing a high-grade 19-jewel movement. It is fronted by an attractive gold and silver, textured dial. It has just been serviced, is running strongly and keeping excellent time. The external dimensions are 43.2mm (1.7”) wide by 11mm (0.43”) deep. THE CASE The snap-on back and bezel, cushion shaped case was made by the Star Watchcase Co and is marked S.W.C.Co 14KT Gold Filled (which means plated). It carries a 25-year warranty, the highest thickness of plating in the range. It has an attractive floral pattern around the perimeter of the back and bezel. The back has a plain bright finish and bears a set of ornate initials, engraved in the style of the era. The covers close tightly shut; the crown is still well defined and the bow is firm. The case shows only light pocket wear and it shows only tiny traces of brassing. It has no dents or edge knocks and it looks in excellent overall condition. THE MOVEMENT The pendant wound and set, high-grade nickel movement is marked South Bend Watch Co. U.S.A. 19 Jewels, Adjusted to Temp. & 4 positions, Double Roller, 429. The serial number of 997515 dates production to 1921. It features, screwed gold jewel settings, a very neat micrometric regulator and is beautifully damaskeened. It looks in excellent condition, with only a few minor service marks. It has just been serviced, is running strongly and keeping excellent time. THE DIAL, HANDS & CRYSTALThe double sunk metal dial, with sub seconds is signed South Bend. It has a textured whitish silver outer sink with Arabic hour numerals and a central gold chapter with a patterned finish. The dial does show some signs of aging, in the form of tarnish spots but this is quite usual for 87-year-old metal dial. It still looks very attractive as the images show. The matching set of “open kite styled” blued steel hands look in excellent condition, as does the bevelled glass crystal, which is free of chips or scratches. SUMMARY This is a really handsome looking man’s dress watch from the Art Deco era. Not only does it look great, the high quality 19-jewel movement keeps excellent time, so you can bid with confidence.
