Description
This watch has every rare element that a collector would look for in a rare pocket watch. It is an engraved presentation watch (to George Coffing, 1862 and later to his son George Coffing Warner in 1892). It is an engraved custom ordered solid 18k yellow gold Tiffany & Co. New York watch with a jewelers name and dial (R. Peardon, London 1390) with a very high grade, approx. 18s ¾ plate, fusee movement. This movement highly resembles the Charles Frodsham 46-50mm movement pictured on page 493 of the 2007 Complete Price Guide to Watches. This Peardon watch movement comes with 18 sapphire jewels and one diamond endstone in the balance cock. It is further enhanced by wolfs’ tooth winding and gold balance screws. The dial side of the movement is marked with the letters K & S and #’s 18x1 and the ser. # 1390. All plates and bridges appear to contain the serial #. This high jeweled key wind and set fusee movement runs and sets very well. The plain solid 18k gold hunting case is well hallmarked and in very nice condition. The movement is pristine and only the dial suffers from some small damage at the 6:00 mark. This watch weighs 130.1 grams (case, dial and movement) and we estimate the gold content to be around 75 total grams. The watch comes with a gold filled chain and the proper period key for the key wind/key set movement. The only info. we could obtain on George Coffing is that he and others organized the Wawbeck Mills in Connecticut in 1866. Printed documentation of this will be included with the watch. This makes a very interesting footnote to a very exceptional timepiece. Tiffany & Co. 18k case, high grade fusee movement by R. Peardon of London, personal presentation dated 1862 (and later 1892) all in a running watch. What more can you ask for! Thank you for viewing this auction.
