Description
7 JEWEL WALTHAM MODEL 88 POCKET WATCH WITH RARE CHRONOMETRO VICTORIA FANCY DIAL 16 Size Gold-Filled, Open-Face, Stem-Set, No. 5,399,613 Circa 1892 R-3 J. D. This unique dial is signed "Chronometro Victoria A. W. W. Co. Waltham." Blue stars are set at center and Arabic hour chapters are trimmed with gold circular frames and gold leaf accents. The 5-minutes are marked with ruby-red paste stones and gold crescent moons appear within the subsidiary seconds dial. The condition is very fine, this is an ultra-rare dial. The gilt movement is in mint condition. It comes in a double hinged back case which is also mint with engine turnings surrounding an uninitialed crest and circular frame on the back cover. The Chronometro Victoria timepieces were designed for the English export market by Waltham as a similar marketing concept as the famous Patek Philippe chronometro gondolo series.. CSJDCAT122006-54 JOE DE MESY - is a recognized expert throughout the world on fine contemporary watches and rare vinage wristwatches. Joe co-authored a series of price guides and reference books on collectors wristwatches which are still widely in use today. Joe De Mesy used his vast knowledge of watches and his keen eye for condition over a 30 year period to assemble his pockdet watch collection. In his own words this is how I started: "I was introduced to American pocket watches in 1972 by brother, a watchmaker, while visiting his shop in Minnesota he pulled out several pieces he was currently repairing to explain to me he intricacies and workmanship of American made timepieces, which rivaled some of he best Swiss watches of their era. I was immediately hooked. Litle did I know that my newfound inerest and hobby would continue for the next 30 years and become my fulltime profession. In 1985, I sold my previous business in order to devote myself fully to the buying, selling and trading of antique watches of all types, with an emphasis on American made pocket watches. During this time, I was fortunate to have he opportunity to purchase many of the finest examples ever produced by American companies, such as Waltham, Howard, Hampden, Elgin, Illinois and many others. At the first NAWCC show I atended in early 1970s, I purchased a small collection of fancy multicolored dials in some of the most spectacular cases I have ever seen. These beautiful dials and ornately engraved cases became one of my primary focal points in puting my collection together. Today, I continue to attend as many NAWCC show as my time permits. But unfortunately the limited supply of these incredible timepieces has all but disappeared, having been hoarded away by collectors. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time when I put my collection together. Afer 30 years of watch collecting, the time has come to give other collectors and museums around the world the opportunity o add to their collections. Many of the museum quality pieces featured in this sale are what I believe to be unique examples of the lost art of "American Horology" never again to o be duplicated. Note!! Each watch purchased from this collection will be presented with a certificate of provenance to show that ii is an original from the Joe De Mesy collection. This item is offered to you by Richard E.
