Description
This high quality antique tool was in my own watch collection for the last 15 years. It stands about 4 ½ inches tall. It is either nickel, or nickel plated and heavy. It is marked “E. LUTHY-HIRT BIENNE No.9775”. it has the top clip which holds your hairspring. Beneath the glass platform is a compensated balance wheel. I believe you are supposed to adjust or vibrate your hairspring to keep the same beat as the one in this tool. I do not know how to use it, I just thought it was a great piece to display. The box that may or may not be original is unmarked. But, the tool fits in nicely, and the box is definitely old as well. A very nice piece. According to TS SPARKS website, tools for watchmaking, “When fitting a hairspring to the balance, it is necessary to select the proper spring strength and get the length roughly correct. This tool holds the trial spring attached to the balance by a small clip from above. The trial balance dangles by the spring with the lower pivot resting on a glass plate. An adjusted reference balance is mounted under the plate. A handle on the lower plate lets the operator give both balances a "push" at the same time. The idea is to watch both balances at once and see if the reference balance is ahead or behind in oscillation period. This is easier said than done. In the good old days, vibrating and fitting balance springs was a specialized craft.”. Buyer pays shipping & insurance, $8 in US. I accept checks, money orders, and Paypal. Overseas buyer will be required to pay higher shipping costs in most cases. Thank you.
